Romsey went into the 2022/23 finals having been runners-up the season before. They lost the first qualifying final, got through to the semi as the best-placed losing side, then beat top-of-the-ladder Gisborne to make the grand final.
Against Sunbury United at Langama Park, the Redbacks were 4/55 before captain Ben Way and Taylor Stevenson put on 109 for the fifth wicket. Way made 67, Stevenson top-scored with 68 and was named man of the match, and Romsey were all out for 199 on a slow, green surface.
On day two the bowlers squeezed the run rate, and when Nathan Hoy held the catch to remove United captain Upul Fernando, the game turned. Matt Milne took the final catch the very next ball.
The previous A Grade flag came about 40 years earlier, beating Bulla Village by one wicket in a final that ran into a fourth day. A 16 year old leg-spinner named Peter McIntyre took five wickets in that match and went on to play two Tests for Australia.
